Florian set out to study binding of a CheY homolog to the Caulobacter crescentus C-ring. He was able to visualize it binding the outer surface. In the process he discovered an unexpected 13-fold symmetric cogwheel against the outer membrane that is symmetry mismatched with Caulobacter‘s 11 stator complexes. This is the first paper to show CheY binding location.
